Your feet will thank you: Why the insole (and the right sock) makes all the difference
J.P. HenriWe spend hours choosing the right boot: the style, the leather, the brand. But often, we forget two crucial elements for the comfort and health of our feet: the insole and the socks .
At Gerry 1958, as shoemakers, we see every day the damage caused by ill-fitting shoes or poorly protected feet. True comfort doesn't just come from the outside; it also comes from the inside.
The secret beneath your foot: The Insole
The insole of a boot plays a much more important role than you might think. It's not just there to be soft.
1. Support and cushioning
High-quality insoles provide arch support and cushion impact. This is crucial for preventing back, knee, and foot pain (plantar fasciitis, bunions).
2. Humidity management
Some technical insoles (made of wool or gel) absorb moisture, keeping your feet dry and reducing odor. This is key for Quebec winters!
3. Thermal comfort
In winter, an insulating insole (sheep's wool, felt) can make all the difference between having frozen feet or keeping them nice and warm.

When to change or add a sole?
- If your boots are a little too big.
- If you experience pain after long walks.
- If you have cold feet in winter, even with good boots.
- If your boots have a persistent odor.
The forgotten role: The good bottom
Your socks are not just protection. They are the first line of defense for your foot.
1. Cotton should be avoided in winter
Cotton absorbs and retains moisture. When it's cold, this moisture freezes, and that's the best way to get cold, sweaty feet and blisters.
2. Long live Merino wool and technical fibers
These materials wick away moisture (perspiration) from your skin and keep your feet dry and warm, even when wet. It's a minimal investment for maximum comfort.
3. Thickness matters
Good sock liners provide extra cushioning and protect against chafing (especially when breaking in new boots). They also help to properly "fill" the boot for better support.
Think "system" for your feet
The comfort of your boots is the result of a "system": the boot itself, the insole, and the lower part of the boot. Neglecting one of these elements compromises the whole.
