The Best Tips to Protect Your Shoes from Salt and Snow

Dear shoe enthusiasts,

Winter is here with its share of challenges for our favorite shoes. Snow, salt, and humidity can damage leather and other materials, leaving our precious shoes in less than ideal condition. Luckily, we at 'Chez Gerry' have put together the best tips for keeping your shoes in tip-top shape during the winter.

1. Waterproofing: Your First Shield

The first step to protecting your shoes is waterproofing. Use a product suitable for the material of your shoes (leather, suede, fabric, etc.) and apply it regularly. We particularly recommend "Nanotex (M&B)" , an excellent choice available at 'Chez Gerry 1958'. This creates a protective barrier against water and salt.

2. Regular Cleaning: A Necessity

After each use, clean your shoes. For salt and dirt, use a soft brush to remove exterior residue. On leather, a damp cloth followed by a treatment with cleaning milk can work miracles.

3. Leather Care: The Importance of Hydration

Leather, like your skin, needs to be hydrated. Use special leather creams or balms to prevent it from cracking due to cold and dryness. The product "Invulver de Saphir" is also available from us and is ideal for this task.

4. Shoe trees: To keep in shape

Investing in quality shoe trees is essential. They help maintain the shape of your shoes and absorb interior moisture.

5. Alternate your Shoes

Wearing the same pair every day can accelerate their wear, especially in winter. Alternating between multiple pairs allows each pair to dry completely and return to shape.

6. Beware of Salt Stains

Salt stains are annoying but treatable. Mix one part white vinegar with three parts water and apply gently to the stain. Let dry naturally.

In addition to this advice, at 'Chez Gerry 1958' we also offer a treatment and protection service for your shoes. Visit our store to discover our products and services, and to get personalized advice on caring for your shoes during the winter.
