Practical tips for cleaning and maintaining your leather boots during winter
Philipe Moreau-LatreilleEspecially with snow, salt and mud that can damage them
Remove dirt immediately
As soon as you get inside, use a soft brush or damp cloth to remove any snow, mud, or salt. Do not let the residue dry on the leather, as it can dry out or stain it.
Gentle cleansing
Prepare a solution of warm water with a little mild soap (such as Marseille soap or a special leather soap). Dip a clean cloth in this solution and gently rub the boots. Avoid soaking them completely, as too much water can damage the leather.
Remove salt stains
Road salt is an enemy of leather. Mix one part white vinegar with two parts water, then wipe a cloth soaked in the mixture over the white stains. Then wipe with a damp cloth to remove the vinegar residue.
Natural drying
Never place your boots near a radiator or direct heat source, as this can cause the leather to crack. Allow them to dry at room temperature, ideally stuffing them with newspaper to absorb any moisture inside and maintain their shape.
Nourish the leather
After cleaning and drying, apply a leather moisturizing cream or balm (available at shoe repair shops or supermarkets) with a soft cloth. This protects the leather from drying out due to cold and weather.
Waterproofing
Before wearing them in winter, and regularly during the season, spray them with a waterproofing spray suitable for leather. This creates a barrier against water and salt.
Quick tip for emergencies
If you don't have anything on hand, a baby wipe can help with light cleaning, but it's not a substitute for a full cleaning.
As a bonus
Store your boots in a dry, ventilated place away from moisture to prevent mold and mildew. These steps will keep your boots looking great all winter long!
